PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. Prophylaxis means to prevent – PrEP is used by people who are HIV-negative to reduce their risk of getting HIV. When PrEP is taken correctly it reduces the risk of getting HIV by over 90%. But PrEP doesn’t prevent you from getting other STIs. Correct and consistent use of condoms for anal sex also reduces your risk of getting HIV and also protects against other STIs such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia.
PrEP is a medication that may be risky for some people who have other health conditions and part of the assessment will include asking about your medical history. PrEP is part of a package of healthcare which includes assessing your medical history before you start and regular testing for HIV and STIs and regular follow-up.
